One of the things I like to do is always inspect your dogs for fleas and since you are here reading all this I wanted to share with you what I know about flea care.
Fleas! what a pain...if you get flea bites here and there can you imagine what your dog or pet is going through by having this creatures crawling and biting all the time? They are miserable and you must stop that from happening.
Fleas are one of the most frequent dog and pet care concerns in America and around the world. It's going to happen no matter what so it is of your best interest and your dogs to come up with a prevention plan before it gets out of control.
Fleas are external parasites that have the power of making your and your dogs life very miserable. They crawl in hard to reach areas and bite to feed on blood. They are agile and can jump up to 2 feet in the air and mingle around waiting for the opportunity to jump on board your dogs or even you.
So you have an idea how bad of a situation fleas can cause if not prevented, they can live longer than flies usually up to 13 days but in the right environment as long as 12 month. What's worst during that time it can produce millions of offsprings. OUCH!
Did you know that there are different species of fleas? One in particular is famous here in America to be a pest for us and our pets: the cat flea also called Ctenocephalides felis.
Symptoms of Fleas You Should Watch For on Dogs
Fleas seem to be intelligent parasites and linger around the abdomen, their butt and base of the tail and on the head by the ears. They are sneaky little creatures!
Common signs and symptoms of fleas on dogs include:
Droppings or “flea dirt” in a dog’s coat (small dark "grains of sand")
Flea eggs (tiny, white grains)
Excessive scratching, licking or biting at skin
Scabs and hot spots
What Causes Fleas
--> Fleas are easily brought in from the outdoors. There are many cats out there with no owner and home so you can imagine what a great transport they are.
--> Fleas thrive in warm, humid climates at temperatures of 65 to 80 degrees.
--> Adult fleas spend most of their lives on the animal, laying eggs in the fur.
These eggs drop out onto rugs, upholstery, bedding and furniture; the new adult fleas will, in turn, find their living
host (either human or animal).
What Kind of Complication can Fleas bring?
Did you know a fleas can consume 15 times their own body weight in blood? That is enough to cause anemia or a significant amount of blood loss over time. In young puppies and kittens this could be life threatening as the number of red blood cells are depleted. Some pets have heightened sensitive to the saliva of fleas, which can cause an allergic reaction known as flea allergy dermatitis.
How to Treat Your Dogs for Fleas?
Best thing to do is to get with your vet to seek advise if there is a flea problem. A treatment for flea control is needed for all dogs and cats specially if they go outdoors frequently. Also you must treat the living environment for your and your pet's sake.
Once your veterinarian confirms the diagnosis, a treatment plan may include the following:
--> Topical or oral treatment or the use of shampoos, sprays and powders on the pet.
--> Thorough cleaning of your house, including rugs, bedding and upholstery. Severe cases may require using a spray or a
fogger, which requires temporary evacuation of the home.
--> It is very important not to use products on your cat that are intended for dogs.
--> Lawn treatments may also be needed if your pet keeps getting re-infected every time it goes outside.
What else can you do to prevent flea infestation?
Use a flea comb on your pet and wash his bedding once a week. Keep the outside of your house free of organic debris, such as rake clippings and leaves, and remember that fleas like to hide in dark, moist, shady areas.
There are many preventative flea control products available, both as prescription and over-the-counter formulas. Frontline for me works great compared to other brands, but always is good to consult with your vet.
Fleas are not joke and that is why I include checking on them while dog sitting overnight in Moreno Valley or any other areas I am providing my services.
